The painter Antonio López returned to the Puerta del Sol in Madrid this Thursday to finish the painting that he left unfinished in 2010. The artist stood at the same angle as that year, in the central area of the square, from where the Royal Casa de Correos, seat of the presidency of the Community of Madrid, and Calle Mayor. And unlike then, yesterday there were not too many onlookers around him and he was able to enjoy some privacy to carry out his work.
Dressed in shorts, striped shirt, clogs and red cap, the painter was happy with the afternoon’s work, which, despite the heat of the day in Madrid, he considered “very pretty and with good light”, in statements to Eph. Antonio López announced last April that he wanted to return to the center of the capital this summer to finish that landscape that he began to paint and abandoned in 2010: “This summer, God willing, I would like to continue the painting that I started years ago, in Puerta del Sol, so I’ll come in the afternoons ”.
11 years ago the painter always worked between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on a work to which he initially planned to dedicate three summers. He decided that schedule and that station because of “the special light.” The hundreds of onlookers who came to see his work slowed down his work. Also the media, which tried to capture his every gesture. It practically became one more tourist attraction in the city. “Not that they look at me, but talking is violent for me,” said the painter then.
